I find walking meditation helps when the sitting mind gets busy. I keep the steps simple: lift, move, place, arrive. When I start to watch the feet for signs of calm, it turns into checking. The Buddha often pointed the mind back to the body, and I have found that plain noticing keeps the practice alive.
I do not want the walk to become proof that I am doing it right. I want it to be a small door back to the present moment, even on a busy day. If the mind wants a score, I let it know the score is not the point.
How do you keep walking practice from becoming a test? Do you use a simple phrase, a longer path, a slower pace, or just the next step? I’d like to hear from people who see it differently, especially those who prefer sitting or who find walking too quiet.
