I’m curious how dependent arising can be used as a practical map without taking any story of rebirth as settled. In the early suttas, the Buddha points to conditions: ignorance, craving, formations, feeling, and the rest. That feels usable in the present: when a mental note of 'mine' appears, I check what came before it and what it feeds. Does that become a real practice if I leave the long horizon open?
I’d welcome replies from people who see dependent arising as mainly a soteriological tool for ending a future chain, and from people who treat it as a description of moment-by-moment experience. Where do you draw the line between using a teaching as a pointer and treating it as a metaphysical claim? If the map is useful even when its far end is unsettled, what keeps the practice honest?
