I keep returning to a small image: a bell, a breath, a door hinge. In zazen, shikantaza is often described as sitting without seeking. But when the mind notices that the body has settled, it asks, “Is this deeper?”
I am not asking for a verdict. I am asking how a plain cue can remain a cue when experience starts to look like a map. If we say “inhale” and the body answers, is that practice becoming a scoreboard? If we say “notice” and the mind files the notice under evidence, have we made a little bureaucracy out of stillness?
The Buddha spoke of knowing things as they are, not as we would like them to be. That sounds close, but not quite the same. A map can help, yet a map is not the ground.
What does a small cue look like in your own practice? How do you keep it from turning into a test?
